Lady J Movie Review

The product of past romance is one-sided hostility, which we see manifesting in Madame de La Pommeraye’s wounded heart after she falls victim to a notorious womanizer. With a bleeding heart, she allows her grudge to unravel the tales of “Lady J.”

And as the story zig-zags from one unexpected turn of events to another, the ending becomes all the more ambiguous and the events all the more captivating.

Aristocratic romance and class privilege leave the proud and widowed Madame P plotting to give her marquis and past lover a taste of his own medicine. With her feelings refined and her judgment in place, Madame P ensues with her plan execution. Every detail is considered to build the ideal facade of virtuous romance. A picture of deception where her Marquis is left thirsting after a delicate chaste girl.

As the days pass, Madame P’s plan takes effect and Marquis falls head over heels for his made-up love. Guiding the scam like a chess game from a distance, Madame persuades Marquis to give into the smothering ties of marriage to claim his true love.

Once their love is sealed on paper Madame P reveals the truth to Marquis; exposing that his chaste love is a prostitute and that his feelings where in reality a trivial character in a devious scheme crafted and concocted by Madame P.

Marquis after the masks around him fall off, becomes the laughing stock in the country. Yet he stills holds on to his marriage and the innocence glimmering in his wife’s eyes drives him to depart the city with her in an attempt to let the story die down and hoping for a new beginning.

Initially, I was FUMING when the movie ended, and possibly never hated an ending this much. How can Lady J not hate a lustful man who mirrors her father’s behavior? Was she not led to her misfortunate fate following her womanizer father’s cruel abandonment? And yet here she is hating on Madame P not realizing that beyond class differences, they’re both victims to unfaithful men.

Madame P was not the most pleasant of women neither her demeanor nor her interactions, and perhaps the Marquis has treated her better, but zooming out of this myopic vision might provide Lady J with deeper insight.

But in the end, this marriage will save her honor and terminates her services at the brothel, in essence, she seems to be the only one benefiting from the chaotic revenge.

On the other hand, we find that Madame P herself didn’t treat Lady J and her mother with respect. In fact, outside their roles, Madame P abuses her privileges and class ranking by not empathizing with the struggles of Lady J and her mother.

The closing scene depicts Madame P carelessly narrating that whatever may happen with her past lover and Lady J, she feels at peace. Clearly, the events of her scheme didn’t give her what her heart completely desired. But the short-lived victory may be enough to heal her heartbreak. Perhaps, after going this far, she might have realized that it wasn’t truly worth it.

In truth, I personally do not believe Marquis to be a faithful man, nor do I believe that his story with Lady J is sufficient to refine his character. Soon his feelings will die out and he’ll commence with his infidelities, promising flames of eternal love that extinguish the moment he claims his interest.

But this story will live forever in the city. It is likely to carry its consequences to his social interactions for long after. Meaning that Madamme P’s plotting did not go in vain.
