Welcome to this week’s edition of You Can Binge That. This week, we will be shining the spotlight on Academy Award-winning writer and director Sofia Coppola

Growing up as the daughter of critically-acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola (the man responsible for movies such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather series) Sofia Coppola decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and direct movies of her own. She made her directing debut in 1999 with The Virgin Suicides and later went on to become an Oscar-winning filmmaker in 2004 with Lost In Translation. She has paved the way for so many women in the film industry and has a few films that you can binge on streaming services anywhere.

In this heartwarming comedy, Bill Murray plays Bob Harris, a successful actor who travels to Japan to shoot a commercial. On his trip, he meets a young philosophy student named Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johannson. The two grow a special bond and navigate a world where communication is a challenge. The film is wonderfully shot and is overwhelmingly praised and acclaimed among critics. I give props to Coppola for choosing to not add subtitles whenever a Japanese character speaks because it puts the audience in the shoes of our protagonists. Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite movies and the screenplay is phenomenal. It is available to stream on NBC’s streaming service Peacock.

The Bling Ring

The Bling Ring tells the true story of five teens obsessed with the lives of rich socialites who decide to break into the mansions of famous celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan and steal millions of dollars worth of jewelry, clothes, and accessories. The movie is based on a real scandal and lawsuit that involved five teens that robbed the mansions of famous celebrities. Although this movie is a comedy, it was heartbreaking to see these famous people have personal items taken away from them. It’s a fantastic movie and a lot of fun to watch. It is available to stream on Netflix.

In Sofia Coppola’s newest film, she reunites with Murray who plays Felix a rich man who visits his daughter Laura, played by Rashida Jones, in New York City. When Laura suspects that her unfaithful husband is cheating on her with another woman, the two take it upon themselves to investigate. This movie has a lot of heart and deals with important life lessons on the true meaning of a family and how there is no stronger bond than one between a father and a daughter. The movie is currently playing in select theaters. However, if you want socially distance yourself, you can stream it on AppleTV+, Apple’s very own streaming service.

That is all for now. I hope you check out more of Sofia Coppola’s work. She is a very talented woman and has done a great job of stepping into her father’s shoes as a filmmaker. Next week, we will be taking a look at some underrated competition reality TV shows that you can stream on the next You Can Binge That.
