My Artist Statement as BOSH?

Stories should be told. Variety is the slice of life that you’re served at a given point in time. Or should I say, more relatably, that “variety is the spice of life” – and so stories must be told. And when one possesses a wealth of experiences and a history such as mine, it may not exactly be a kind, loving gift to keep my stories from the world. This is why unhindered self-expression is crucial to me. Hence, trumpet playing.

The other day, I convinced someone whom I swore was dogmatic by simply providing, yet again, some perspective. They were quite the awful listener, but somehow I happened to reach their soul – for it was a sensitive subject – and I was astonished. I have come to find that conversation is the bedrock of understanding, whether of external or even personal or more intimate affairs. That we present our ideas may not matter as much as the manner in which we present them. My experience with X was one of the many, intervallic rerealizations of this reasoning.

And holding this knowledge is how I came to be on a journey of self-actualisation that caused me to confront my self-formed trumpet playing technique over and over again, almost to the point of misery. I have felt and felt and felt and taken time and continue to spend time refining my speech. I say speech because besides as expression, music like jazz or any other styles that involve improvisation is conversation to me. For improvisation is saying not what composer or listener feels, but presenting what the improviser thinks about said subject (piece of music) or the absence of any. That conversation could be a public speech or a love story or a debate or an argument or an emotionally unintelligent exchange between loved ones or an angry artist expressing his pain or grief.

If you ask me what inspires me, it is you and me and everyone else and the world. All of my experiences nurture my notions. And presenting them using the trumpet is not always difficult for me. This is why I continue to study music theory and the different mp3 perspectives of the greats who have put their knowledge and notions into practice and/or performance.
