How Ohio Natives Showed The Value Of Hardwork and Perseverance

The Wright Brothers’ First Flying Machine

They were just a couple small town boys who had a thing for making toys and one of these so happened to change the world forever.

With no silver spoons all they did have was hard work, perseverance, and a strong supporting cast backing them through the journey.

The Beginnings

The Wright Brother in their Youth Orville(right) Wilbur(left)

Wilbur the older of the two by almost four years, was born in Indiana whereas his younger brother Orville, the more fortunate of the two was actually born in Dayton, Ohio to Milton Wright and Susan Koerner. I say this solely in reference to Wilbur having been quoted saying “If I were giving a young man advice as to how he might succeed in life, I would say to him, pick out a good father and mother, and begin life in Ohio.” They were two of seven children total, two older siblings; Reuchlin and Lorin, and three younger; Katharine(three years younger than Orville) and twins who died as infants. Though their father was a priest who found himself traveling about often working as a bishop, he allowed the children to decide themselves what spiritual avenue they wanted to take on. Unfortunately, their mother passed away 22 years after having gave birth to Wilbur so she was not able to witness her boys’ impact on the world though she is suggested to have always had high expectation. The father placed emphasis on the importance of informal education at home and giving the children free will to experiment and often found himself in heavy support of many of their projects that he seen worthy so much as to allow them miss school sometimes.Yet despite this Wilbur still had big intentions of attending Yale University upon graduating, but he was not able to do so because he was struck by a future murderer with a hockey stick while ice skating with some of his friends. This free will of course ultimately paid off, as had they not had such freedom it is very likely that they would have never made such a mark on the world in their construction of the very first flying machine ever.

The Start of a Journey

The initial inspiration to even think of creating such a mode of transportation actually stemmed from the inconvenience of Wilbur being bedridden by a typhoid fever. During his time sick he began to read of Otto Lilienthal(a german glider enthusiast) who had at that point very recently died in an accident.

This reading sparked Wilbur to revisit some past text that he read by a French physician named Etienne-Jules Marey titled Animal Mechanism which spoke on aerial locomotion as well. Upon recovery from the fever Wilbur was able to read more novels on the subject and eventually got around to writing a letter to the Smithsonian in request of publications that the museum had on the subject matter. Of the material he did receive, very important was some that he received from Octave Chanute as he is later known recognized in a more infamous light for overstating his contributions to the Wright brothers’ machine.

Upon becoming what the pair deemed knowledgeable enough to begin the engineering stage of the project the two began to do just that. The two set out to design a flying machine and even had aid in the creation of a motor for this particular machine. They eventually headed to Kitty hawk, NC for their actual manned testing of the machine which is more of a secluded area allowing for prime focus whereas many of their counterparts failed while trying to appeal to the limelight such as Manly and Langly.

Faith in The Process

In all, it took the brothers a total of four years to finally be able fly for the first time though the flight was very short lived(only 59 seconds. Despite many obstacles they faced throughout their journey as well as very limited resources(they used $1000 in total to fund their project) the most valuable thing about their project was in themselves and their hardworking nature. Aside from that they were even brave enough to deny funding from outside sources as they feared such may alter the steady course of the project.

They also showed the benefits of working more under the radar as seems to have allowed them to be able to focus more energy on their project as they had no fear of humiliation in contrast to some of their counterparts.

Why Their Story is inspiring

The Wright Brothers story obviously proves that even in the case that one may not come from the wealthiest of families there is still a chance to leave a mark on the world creatively. Their success and wide recognition today is solely based on the fact that they were hard working and stayed consistent with their work. They also had the benefit of having a very strong supporting cast in their family and helpers and gratefully cherished this.

The brothers also showed how valuable time is in the fact that despite only having used $1000 (way less than their counterparts) they unlike them were actually able to create a working machine. This shows that time and persistence are sometimes more valuable an asset than money.
