Make Your Health A Priority

I get it. Everyone is busy. Here in the southeast everyone has been stressed and busy the last couple of months. Hurricane season has been especially brutal on us this year. So everyone’s attention, is rightly turned to those who have lost so much. Relief efforts are going on everywhere to help those who have been affected by Hurricanes Florence and Michael. I am so glad there are people out there that can help and I donate as much as I can.

During these times, however, people take their own health for granted. I try to tell people that it is impossible to pour from an empty cup. When you are preparing for takeoff on a flight, the attendant always says to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others. The same goes for everyday life. You can’t help others if you yourself are suffering.

This should be an everyday thing, not just during times of devastation and crisis. We should all make better health a top priority. It is one of the most important things we have. You however may fail to realize this until it is taken away. Trust me, I know.

I have dealt with health issues for the majority of my life. Being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a young age, being diagnosed with Sarcoidosis of the lungs in 2009, and a few other issues thrown in for good measure. The difference with me is that I don’t let these issues control me and I most definitely never let them stop me!

I live my life doing research on how to improve my health and my life. I don’t take the easy way out and just take a pill that the doctor prescribed. That doesn’t work for me. True, I do take insulin everyday, but that is really the only medication I take. I always search for a healthier, more natural way of managing or curing whatever issue I may face. Even with diabetes, I improved my lifestyle to improve my blood sugar.

When your health is failing it is harder to do everything else. It’s hard to hold down a job, hard to care for your family or even do things for yourself. Everything is just hard. So why not take some initiative and make your health a priority? Take a look at what you do, what you eat, what you think and ask yourself if that is working. Ask yourself what can YOU do to make improvements. Start small with one or two changes. It’s a start in the direction. If you need help, find someone who may be going through the same issues, or call a lifestyle or health coach. Sometimes the extra guidance and support can make all the difference. Do it for your family, your friends, but most importantly, do it for yourself.
