Understanding Sexism In India

Sexism is defined as discrimination based on sex/gender of a person.

Historically women have been the major victims of sexism.

And for those who like to argue on everything — sure some men too but 1% of the 1/10th so we’ll talk about that towards the extreme end.

Now, for those who are like “what does this even mean? — I sign on something like this on my offer/appointment letter and HR talks about it but no one knows dude and no one cares”. Well, you should and everybody should — even if you don't give 2 fucks, at least read it to understand how women in your life feel every day.

Let's start with some typical Indian examples to understand what statements or behaviors are considered sexist —

If you are a man and you go to prison you would be scared that other men in the prison would rape you, now imagine that's how a woman feels every single day. In India alone, there are 25k rape cases every year out of which 98% are committed by someone who is known to the victim.

So, as if that feeling isn’t crazy enough — we men think we are superior to women and start being sexist too instead of helping in eradicating this global issue. Most men can’t even imagine what a woman goes through every day — when she is ignored because she is a woman, when she can't go on a small walk after dark because she is a woman, when she can't even live her life the way she wants to because she is a woman but men get to do all of that. When the men in her own life do not understand what she goes through and they don't treat her equally.

Women have been fighting for their rights globally and I am ashamed to be a part of the gender that is committing sexism all across the planet and I have taken this as a pledge to educate as many people as I can (mostly men) — especially when I spend time in India and trust me being an Indian doesn’t make it easy rather they say that you have been Americanized — now why they say that is another big issue, will discuss some other day.

For now, I request every person who has read this to help me and women around the world to educate people on this topic, stop your friends and colleagues from being sexist. ALL GENDERS ARE EQUAL AND NEED TO HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS.
