What if Your Life Was an Artwork?

The way you live your life is influenced by the metaphors you use

The way you are living your life is influenced by the metaphors you live by. Once you know that, you can deliberately shift them around and have some fun.

Is your life a heroic journey of overcoming obstacles and reaching milestones in order to arrive at some glorious destination? Is it a story or a movie that you are the main actor of, or the writer, or both at once?

Are you living out the pre-written scripts of others? Is it a constraining prison that tests your resilience, survival instinct and willpower?

Is life a sophisticated test to you, to prove your loyalty to a divine being or a religion? A school of never-ending self-Improvement?

Do you see it as a dance that you just enjoy with your best friends or a big theater stage of playing different roles and exploring different expressions of your personality?

The big life metaphors that you live by, work like operating systems of a computer. They enable you access to certain functions and features and are the gateway to unique worlds of thoughts, emotions and experiences.

They color your perceptions, how you interpret events and most definitely, they influence your decision-making for better or worse. The good news is that you can not only update them, but deliberately create and choose your own.

Over the years, I found a lot of value in the metaphor of life as a creative process, similar to that of an artist intuitively painting, sculpting or drawing. A white, blank canvas is a space of freedom and expression, where anything goes.

The only limitations of expressions are set by the size, form and quality of the canvas and the available materials.

When the free space interacts with these defined constraints and limits (which in life translate to our level of autonomy, standards, skills, financial resources, thinking and decision-making), then it generates a creative tension that allows the new, the not-yet to emerge.
