Beneath Our Beliefs Lurk BIAS

If I believe it, it’s true. Don’t confuse me with the facts.

What we do depends on what we believe. Our first inclination is to believe only what we want to believe — evidence rarely wanted. Even when we’re not looking for information, it comes at us from every angle. There’s no refuge unless you live as the Old Order Amish or dwell in a wilderness cave as the Christian hermits did after the persecutions ended.

Writers need information. Without it, what could we find to write about? It’s often contradictory. Too much of it is so specialized that we need a Master’s degree to comprehend it, much less critically evaluate it. Our brains were created to cope with an excess of information by creating short-cuts. They filter information based on unconscious biases.

I joined Medium in September 2020 and I’m enjoying it very much. I have very low earning expectations because I’m not highly engaged compared to someone who publishes one or more articles each day. Nevertheless, I want to believe that Medium is my “writing home”, that it’s the community and platform I’ve always wanted but didn’t know existed. While scanning articles to read and comment on, I’ve come across several that bash Medium. I’ve chosen to ignore these because I don’t want to give their negative outlook to have any space in my mind. It’s not that I think they’re wrong, but my expectations and hopes differ completely from theirs, so what they say wouldn’t apply to me at all.
